The Basics

What is a Demat Account — and Why Do You Need One?

A Demat (Dematerialised) account is a digital vault that holds your financial securities — stocks, ETFs, bonds, government securities, mutual fund units, and unlisted shares — in electronic form. It replaces the need for physical share certificates entirely.

Just as a savings account holds your money, a Demat account holds your investments. Every time you buy a stock or receive shares, they are credited to your Demat account. Every time you sell, they are debited. It’s the backbone of modern investing in India.

“Without a Demat account, you simply cannot hold stocks, ETFs, bonds, or unlisted shares in India.”

SEBI has also mandated that physical share certificates cannot be transferred — they must be dematerialised first. If you have old physical share certificates, converting them to Demat form is no longer optional.

Why It Matters

Six Reasons Every Investor
Needs a Demat Account

📲

Hold Stocks & ETFs

A Demat account is mandatory to buy, hold, or sell listed equity shares, ETFs, and sovereign gold bonds on NSE or BSE.

📜

Dematerialise Old Shares

Old physical share certificates from the 80s and 90s must be dematerialised before they can be transferred or sold. SEBI mandate — not optional.

📊

Hold Unlisted Shares Securely

All unlisted and pre-IPO share transactions settle via Demat transfer. Your ownership is digitally secured and verifiable at any time.

🏛️

Apply for IPOs

Every IPO application in India requires a linked Demat account for share allotment. No Demat account = no IPO access.

🔒

Eliminate Physical Certificate Risk

Physical certificates can be lost, stolen, forged, or damaged. Demat-held securities have none of these risks — your ownership is permanent and digitally registered.

🌍

NRI Investment Access

NRIs must have an NRO or NRE-linked Demat account to hold Indian stocks, bonds, and unlisted shares legally. We specialise in NRI account setup.

Account Types

Which Demat Account
Do You Need?

Not all Demat accounts are the same. Here are the main types and who each is designed for.

Resident Indian

Regular Demat Account

For resident Indian individuals. Holds all securities — stocks, ETFs, bonds, mutual fund units, unlisted shares, and government securities. Required to trade on NSE/BSE, apply for IPOs, and certificates.

✅ For: Indian residents, salaried professionals, business owners
NRI / OCI

NRO Demat Account

For NRIs investing using income earned in India (rent, dividends, pension). Funds are non-repatriable — meaning gains cannot be freely sent abroad. Used to hold shares already owned in India.

✅ For: NRIs with Indian income sources, inherited shares in India
NRI / OCI

NRE Demat Account

For NRIs investing using foreign income remitted to India. Fully repatriable — you can send gains back abroad freely. Linked to an NRE bank account. Subject to RBI/FEMA guidelines.

✅ For: NRIs remitting foreign earnings to invest in Indian markets
Low-Activity Investor

BSDA — Basic Services Demat

A low-cost Demat account for investors with a portfolio value under ₹2 lakh (NSDL) or ₹4 lakh (CDSL). Reduced annual maintenance charges make it ideal for small investors just starting out.

✅ For: First-time investors with small portfolios

Quick Answers

Demat Account FAQs

No. Mutual funds can be held in folio form (via an AMC or distributor like Aasaan Nivesh) without a Demat account. However, a Demat account is required to hold stocks, ETFs, bonds, and unlisted shares — and to dematerialise old physical share certificates. If your investment needs are limited to mutual funds only, you don’t strictly need a Demat account.
Account opening is typically free across most Depository Participants (DPs). The main recurring cost is the Annual Maintenance Charge (AMC) — ranging from ₹300 to ₹900 per year depending on the DP. There are also per-transaction charges for buying and selling securities. We clearly explain all charges before you open an account through us — no surprises.
Both NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) and CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) are SEBI-regulated depositories that do essentially the same job — hold your securities electronically. The difference is which Depository Participant (DP) you work with: some brokers and banks are NSDL-linked, others are CDSL-linked. Both are equally safe and regulated.
Yes. NRI Demat account opening can be completed remotely via video KYC — available since 2025 for most DPs. You’ll need scanned copies of your passport, OCI/PIO card, overseas address proof, and NRO/NRE bank account details. Aasaan Nivesh has set up NRI Demat accounts for clients in UAE, US, UK, and Singapore entirely remotely.
Yes. To dematerialise physical share certificates, you need a Demat account. Once the account is open, you submit a Demat Request Form (DRF) along with your defaced physical certificates to your DP. The DP coordinates with the company’s RTA, and within 2–4 weeks your shares are credited electronically to your Demat account. This is mandatory before you can sell or transfer old physical shares.
Yes — and this is one of the most important uses of a Demat account that most people don’t know about. All unlisted share transactions (pre-IPO stocks, off-market transfers) settle via Demat transfer using off-market transfer forms. Your DP ID and Client ID are required for every unlisted share transaction.
